On May 9, Governor Parris Glendening imposed a moratorium on executions in Maryland until the state completes a study of racial bias in the use of the death penalty.
In addition, California Committee South's efforts to help gather signatures for a moratorium on executions in California culminated on May 1, 2002, when 700 marchers gathered in Sacramento to present 89,000 petition signatures to Governor Gray Davis.
